FORMAL DINING ROOMS: ARE THEY A THING OF THE PAST?
One of the reasons I am a contributor on the PRIME RESIDENTIAL BLOG is the opportunity to share my talents and creative vision.
I love creating spaces in homes where memories can be made. I love sharing design ideas. At PRIME RESIDENTIAL, we have a creative family. We love to learn and then share with our audience. We hope to give you information to help you create value for your home and help you create memories! We get to share with you what we see.
Today I am sharing my personal home and dining room transformation. Formal dining rooms are rare these days. Maybe that’s why I love them so much. Casual dining has really taken hold. Most new homes are built without formal dining rooms. Do you have one?
Recently we decided to transform our front office off our entry way into a formal dining room. I always loved attending family dinners in my mother and grandmother’s dining rooms growing up. I’m a sentimental person, so naturally I want to carry on those traditions with my children and grandchildren. So for our home, it came high on my priority list.
I had no idea how much we would use this room. We’ve absolutely loved having this extra entertaining space as a gathering place for family and friends.
Time to pull out the china!

Besides re-sheetrocking the ceiling (we wanted to cover up texture to have a smooth, flat ceiling) we did the rest of the work ourselves.
To create a timeless, sophisticated look, we went with picture frame moulding, a heavy crown, and Benjamin Moore’s Dove White 50% high gloss for the wall color. I’m always amazed at what a little millwork & paint can do!
Our 10 ft tall ceilings don’t hurt when it comes to adding grandness to the room either. Now all we need to really finish off the room are hardwood floors, a turkish rug, and some artwork.
I love our home! Hope you enjoy what we’ve done.
