DIY: Creating the Perfect Office Space for Your Home

We lived in an 1100 square foot home in the beautiful state of North Carolina before we made the move to our current home. Unfortunately, our quaint little home didn't have enough space for my kids toys (we ended up creating a toy room under the stairs) let alone a craft/office room. So...I'm sure you can imagine my excitement when we moved into a home that had room for an office. Yep, an office. But I wanted a craft room too. What to do, what to do?

After much deliberation between my husband and I, we decided to combine them. Make an office and craft room in one! I also was able to create a homework space where all of the books, backpacks and homework can go after school. The best part is that my kids can do homework in this space and stay away from all of the distractions that doing homework at the kitchen table provides (you moms out there know what I'm talking about, right?).

We began the process with figuring out how to add the largest amount of counter space using the smallest amount of the room. We purchased 5 of these. We placed them along 2 walls. We were able to save some money by using this particle board.

We cut down to size for our counter tops. We added a few coats of paint and some polyurethane and we had beautiful counter tops.

One of the biggest needs I had was space for storage. So we definitely needed a few upper cabinets. We purchased some cabinets from IKEA and hung them above the desk areas. This solved a lot of my storage problems but still needed a place for my kids school supplies. I had my awesome dad build me a storage until with a couple of shelves (more storage space, woohoo) and 5 hooks for each of my kids backpacks.

The icing on the cake was finding a $20 used kitchen table from the online classifieds and re painting it to match my decor. Added some stenciling to 1 of my walls and I was feeling good about how it was all coming together.

Stay tuned for an easy DIY wrapping paper holder that I added to a small wall in my office. It's all about organization and utilizing your space. This space in my home has become the most utilized room in our house (besides the kitchen) and I am so happy that we were able to create it just the way we wanted.
