5 Things to do During the Holidays in SLC
This time of year is wonderful time to spend time with family. Sometimes it can seem like there is a little too much family time. If you are looking to spend some time outside of the home with the family this season these are a few fun activities to consider:
1- Swimming- one of the few traditions we do every year is swimming with our good friends on Christmas Eve. What started on a whim 5 years ago with 2 families has turned into a yearly event. Most community pools are open on Christmas Eve and usually shut down by 1 or 2. Most of the time the pool is dead so we have the place to ourselves. Every year we try a new indoor pool and try to invite a new family to join us. In 2015 we convinced 5 families to come out. It's been such a fun tradition! Who is ready for 2016?!
2- Ice Skating- We love to get out on the ice and check our skate legs at least once a year. The best part of ice skating is no one is good at it so you can just get out and enjoy yourself. The other good thing is you have the option to do it indoors or out. Our two favorite places to go are the Gallivan Center and Cottonwood Heights Rec Center.
3- Visit Downtown- we love to see the lights at Temple Square and the Christmas tree at City Creek. We always park at City Creek and grab a bite to eat at the food court, my favorite is Red Iguana while the kids slum it at Chik-Fil-A and my better half grabs some Kneaders. Food Courts are genius!! On the way to the lights do not miss the windows at Macy's, the finest candy sculpturing this side of the Mississippi. There is something special about being downtown shoulder to shoulder with strangers while enjoying the beautiful things SLC has to offer. Do not forget to tip the Rocking Santa when you see him. The best part of this night aside from the food is everything is free.
4- Sledding- For those that can't ski/snowboard there is sledding. We love to hit the local parks but I know most ski resorts have a sledding hill nowadays. We are regulars at the park on Ft. Union Blvd in Cottonwood Heights where Mountain View Elementary used to be. The key to a good sledding hill is a North facing slope, the snow melts at a much slower rate. (note to my clients; it is good to have a South facing house for the same reason).
5- The Zoo- Another Raulston favorite is going to Hogle Zoo to see the lights and animals. I am a huge fan of the zoo and the it is much different experience this time of year, and at night. The zoo is usually open until 9 or 10 depending on the day the weather is frigid so dress accordingly. Prices are $8 for adults and $6 for kids.
